Messi confirms his Argentina farewell

Lionel Messi published a farewell letter on 31 August 2026 and formally announced his retirement from Argentina duty. The 39-year-old said the decision was painful, but felt the time had come for a younger generation to take responsibility.

The announcement concerns international football only. Messi remains an Inter Miami player, so his Argentina retirement should not be read as the end of his club career.

A record 207 caps and 125 goals

Reuters reported that Messi finishes with Argentina records of 207 appearances and 125 goals. He made his senior international debut in 2005 and first appeared at a World Cup in 2006.

His 21-year run developed from that early introduction into a long spell as captain and the centre of Argentina's attack. It also covered the full arc from painful final defeats to a sustained period of major success.

A World Cup and two Copa America titles

Messi captained Argentina to Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The World Cup triumph remains one of the defining achievements of his international career.

Argentina later reached the 2026 World Cup final, where Spain won 1-0 after extra time. Although the title was not retained, that campaign became an important final chapter of Messi's time in the national team.

Argentina begins its next cycle

Messi placed the emphasis on Argentina's future in his farewell message, saying that young players were ready to come through. The next phase will involve more than replacing one position: the team must redistribute leadership, chance creation and decision-making in decisive moments.

How Argentina reorganises its attack, set pieces and dressing-room responsibilities will now be a central storyline.
